Chicago has been receiving some bad press recently ever since they decided to introduce a ban on the sale of foie gras in city restaurants and either for publicity reasons or just sheer defiance many of the city's restaurants have continued to offer the banned foodstuff. This week's contender for Dilly Diner of the Week took the battlefront one step further. At 676 Restaurant, chef Robert Gadsby served a seven course Outlaw's Dinner.
Robert's dinner started out with Foie Gras wrapped in proscuitto and doused with hot chocolate followed by a host of other banned foods which have fallen foul of the law in various places ranging from absinthe, to wild mushrooms and unpasteurised cheeses. He even incorporated cooking methods such as sous vide which are banned in certain states by the food police. Of course the sad truth is that the dinner was not quite as illegal as billed since the only real problem area was the foie gras but well done to Robert on excellent marketing. Perhaps the next time he could try some real banned foods such as roasted orlotans, famous for being the last meal of Francois Mitterand.
